What an Inspiration

This is the beach I went to every day for the past week. Being able to log off and spend time at the beach has been a very inspiring time. It has allowed me to clear my mind and come up with better ideas.

Taking a few days off, being offline and at an amazing place can have huge benefits for you. Try it!

I Feel Good

I'll share a secret with you today, no-one's perfect. Even if you know this we still find ourselves questioning and feeling unhappy about our flaws.

What I suggest you do about this is start feeling good about who you are and what you achieve. Stop wasting your energy on what-ifs and thinking about what you did wrong or what others are doing better than you.

Feel good about who you are, where you are and what you have achieved. This change of attitude will help you overcome your problems and achieve more goals.

Smile!

There is one thing that I do constantly and it always helps me, I smile.

I see people all the time with frowns or no emotional signs on their faces and I don't understand why they don't try smiling. Smiling can help you in so many ways:

  • It makes you feel better. That's because when you smile the brain produces endorphins, our natural drug.
  • It attracts people. When people see you smile they want to get to know you.
  • It shows that you are confident.
  • It's contagious. When people see you smile they feel better and smile too.
  • It connects people. When you first meet someone or pass by someone, smiling can give you a few seconds of positive connection.

My advice is to give smiling a try for yourself. Help turn those frowns upside down and feel good while doing it.

The Healthy Mind Platter - Visualised

Almost a month ago I posted about the Healthy Mind Platter, a guide created by Dr. Rock and Dr. Siegel to help us keep our minds healthy.

I wanted to have a good reference and reminder of all the daily activities, so I asked Elena to create a desktop background to help with that.

The backgrounds below should cover most resolutions (select fit to screen so you can see the entire picture). Hover over the image that is suitable for your resolution and click on "Download Full Size". Set it as your desktop background and improve your mind's health.

Desktop Backgrounds for 1920x1200, 1280x800 etc.

Keeping Your Mind Healthy

Our minds are our most valuable tools, yet we don't really take care of them. We overwork, don't sleep enough hours and overload them with information.

For this reason Dr. David Rock and Dr. Daniel Siegel created the Healthy Mind Platter, which includes seven essential mental activities. These need to be done on a daily basis, at lengths that fit your individual needs. The activities are:

Focus Time. When we closely focus on tasks in a goal-oriented way, taking on challenges that make deep connections in the brain.

Play Time. When we allow ourselves to be spontaneous or creative, playfully enjoying novel experiences, which helps make new connections in the brain.

Connecting Time. When we connect with other people, ideally in person, richly activating the brain's social circuitry.

Physical Time. When we move our bodies, aerobically if possible, which strengthens the brain in many ways.

Time In. When we quietly reflect internally, focusing on sensations, images, feelings and thoughts, helping to better integrate the brain.

Down Time. When we are non-focused, without any specific goal, and let our mind wander or simply relax, which helps our brain recharge.

Sleep Time. When we give the brain the rest it needs to consolidate learning and recover from the experiences of the day.

I try to follow most of them each day. Being human I might miss a couple one day. The important thing is that this is not a must do checklist. If you don't do one of the activities, it doesn't mean that you have failed and you need to give up. Try and do all of them on a daily basis and your brain will thank you for it.

PS. Thanks to Sinead from Eightfold for posting this and making me aware of it.
