Lights, Camera, Action!

The scene is set, everyone is at their positions, knows what they have to do, knows their lines and then a blooper happens. What happens next? Take 2.

I know what you're thinking, what does this have to do with anything? When we work on something we expect to do everything right from the beginning. Instead of starting and acting, we spend endless hours planning in order to avoid any mistake or failure.

What's the alternative? Start, act, try new things. If you fail, that's no problem. Try again. Each time you will become better and stronger. Don't expect to get it right from the beginning, there are many things to learn and the best way to learn them is by acting and learning from your mistakes.

Getting Ready For The New Year

Flinch
Image from the cover of The Flinch ebook by Julien Smith

Just a few days left in 2011 and everyone's getting ready for the new year. It's very likely that for christmas you received a device on which you can use the kindle app from Amazon. Whatever device you have (smartphone, tablet, computer or an actual Kindle reader) here is a book you need to download right now: The Flinch by Julien Smith.

The cost to you is 0 (brought to us kindly by the Domino Project) but the effect will be great. Spend the next few days you have off to read this book and get ready to fight in the new year.

Here is one of my favourite extracts from the book:
"Straight-A student. Straight to college. Straight to work. Straight up the corporate ladder. Straight to the suburbs.
Damn, you've been scared straight."

For the New Year, read this book and anything else that will inspire you. Get ready to fight, don't flinch and start! If you need help we will be here. We will continue writing and you can always reach us on hello@minimoko.com.

Do the Work - Encore

Last Monday I wrote a post called "Do the Work", interestingly that week the latest book from Steven Pressfield was published through the Domino Project with this exact title.

Steven Pressfield's book is an inspiration and a guide for anyone starting a project, a new venture or anything new. What's more you can get the Kindle edition for free on Amazon and read it on your PC, Mac, iPad, Kindle or iPhone!

It's a short book, more like a manifesto and it's definitely worth reading from cover to cover. Enjoy it!

Business is Personal

If you believe that business isn't personal, then you allow yourself to act differently and as a "professional". We spend most waking hours working, but we still consider our "professional" life to be disconnected from our personal one.

The problem with that is that we don't just need another "professional" who will do anything to get ahead and win a bonus. We want and need YOU, with all your ideas, skills and problems. In order to be innovative and different from the competition, you need to be personal. You need to show your character and be unique.

Taking what you do personally will also help you realise if it's the right thing to do. If you wake up in the morning and dread getting out of bed because you have another day of work ahead of you, then don't. Stay in bed and think about what's wrong. Think about what you can start. Something that will make you want to get out of bed and enjoy doing it.

When it comes to reality, business is personal and denying leads to misery.
