Most Valuable First

The best way I've found to start the day, is working on things that are of most value to me. Whether that's writing, working on a project or taking a walk and thinking, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you do something that inspires you.

If you don't start the day with something of value, you run the risk of spending your day endlessly chasing emails, checking social media, browsing websites and doing busywork.

What I've found is that when I focus on what's of value to me, then I have one of those days that I feel like I have achieved so much and when I look at the clock it's still 3pm.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you.

Getting Ready For The New Year

Flinch
Image from the cover of The Flinch ebook by Julien Smith

Just a few days left in 2011 and everyone's getting ready for the new year. It's very likely that for christmas you received a device on which you can use the kindle app from Amazon. Whatever device you have (smartphone, tablet, computer or an actual Kindle reader) here is a book you need to download right now: The Flinch by Julien Smith.

The cost to you is 0 (brought to us kindly by the Domino Project) but the effect will be great. Spend the next few days you have off to read this book and get ready to fight in the new year.

Here is one of my favourite extracts from the book:
"Straight-A student. Straight to college. Straight to work. Straight up the corporate ladder. Straight to the suburbs.
Damn, you've been scared straight."

For the New Year, read this book and anything else that will inspire you. Get ready to fight, don't flinch and start! If you need help we will be here. We will continue writing and you can always reach us on hello@minimoko.com.

Slow Down

Dsc01671
In this fast paced world, for us to be inspired we need to slow down.

In all your daily routines you need to stop rushing things, slow down and enjoy every experience. When you eat, enjoy food as it's the first and last time you're eating it. When you are walking to work, slow your pace and take in your surroundings. When making decisions, take a moment to evaluate your thoughts and try to come up with new ideas.

Life is about the journey and not the destination. Slow down and let inspiration find you.

What an Inspiration

Photo

This is the beach I went to every day for the past week. Being able to log off and spend time at the beach has been a very inspiring time. It has allowed me to clear my mind and come up with better ideas.

Taking a few days off, being offline and at an amazing place can have huge benefits for you. Try it!

Best of #InspirationMondays: Just a Notepad

That's all you need to start working on your great project or idea.

Even if it's the most technologically advanced idea, all you need at the start is a notepad. It's also a great way to get inspired to work. Just sit with an empty notepad and a pen in your hand and start writing, drawing, sketching or whatever else comes to mind.

It's a great chance to let your creativity flow and think outside of the box. While doing this, remember to move away from distractions like an open computer, smartphone, tablet or anything else that will blink or buzz and demand your attention.

It's your time in front of the notepad. Enjoy it and create something that you and people will love.

Inspiration is in the Moment

This week I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the Inspire Conference in London. The days were filled with some inspiring talks and nice long breaks where we had the chance to meet new people and exchange ideas.

What I noticed was that among the crowd were some people that throughout the entire conference were clinged to their devices. E-mailing, browsing, twitting, chatting, anything but taking part in the experience. Even during the breaks, there were people that just sat at their seats doing busywork and didn't engage in any conversation. What they failed to understand was that in order to be inspired you had to unplug and let the ideas sink in. This cannot be done when you are spreading your attention to multiple channels of information.

We all live busy lives with information coming towards us constantly. In order to be inspired and have amazing ideas we need to be able to live in the moment. Enjoy the experience and let our brains gather and process the information. Next time you are at a conference, put your devices into sleep and enjoy the experience. Let the ideas take you on a journey and be inspired.

Why Are we Doing This?

I was reading a post from Seth Godin last night that made me stop and think "Why are we doing this?".

The answer was clear, we are doing this to help people and change the way they do and think about branding, simplicity and design. We are not selling anything, generally not promoting stuff (okay some Wednesdays we talk about what we are working on, but it's interesting stuff) and trying to inspire everyone that gives us a bit of their time to read our posts.

The past few months, we've made new friends, new partners and shared our thoughts. If one of our posts changes someone's business or life, then we've achieved our goal.

If you like what you read here, please share it with the people that will benefit the most from it. We're doing it for you and your support is what keeps us going. Thank you!

Do the Work - Encore

Last Monday I wrote a post called "Do the Work", interestingly that week the latest book from Steven Pressfield was published through the Domino Project with this exact title.

Steven Pressfield's book is an inspiration and a guide for anyone starting a project, a new venture or anything new. What's more you can get the Kindle edition for free on Amazon and read it on your PC, Mac, iPad, Kindle or iPhone!

It's a short book, more like a manifesto and it's definitely worth reading from cover to cover. Enjoy it!

Do the Work

I wish there was a magic pill, potion, tip, exercise that I could give you and would help you be inspired. Unfortunately, there isn't. If you want to do something and be inspired, you need to actually do the work.

If you want great inspiration for a book, you need to start writing. If you want to be an inspirational leader, you need to have people to lead, and it goes on and on. The tips that I post every week help, but for them to work you need to have been doing the work. It's only when your mind has been filled with ideas, problems and options that the tips will actually work.

In order to reach writer's block and need to take a walk to clear your head, you need to start writing. You need to practice everyday (ideally) or at least some times a week. The same is true for design, management, marketing, blogging, you name it.

I personally had been procrastinating starting this blog for more than six months. I had all the usual excuses, not enough ideas, not a lot of inspiration every day, didn't have someone to edit my posts, not enough time etc… And then one day it happened, I took the plunge and started writing. What I find now is that the more I write, the more inspiration I have for another post. I can sit down and plan an entire month in less that half an hour.

If you want to be inspired and inspire people around you then start doing the work. Start every day with that thought and with doing the work that you love. You might have problems at first and be lost, but sooner or later ideas will start to appear and with enough practice you will be able to produce amazing stuff. No more excuses, do the work.

The Fisherman and the Businessman

A friend posted a link to the amazing story about "The Fisherman and the Businessman" on Facebook yesterday and I immediately knew I had to re-post.

There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.

As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.

The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?”

The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”

“Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.

“This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said.

The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?”

The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink — we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.”

The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.

“I am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Sao Paulo, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.”

The fisherman continues, “And after that?”

The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.”

The fisherman asks, “And after that?”

The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”

The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

This is a classic Brazilian story posted on Paulo Coelho's blog. I remember having read it somewhere else a long time ago but I can't remember where. Have a great week everyone and evaluate what you currently have, maybe it's not very far from what you want to achieve.
