Have Fun

On Wednesday I posted about a personal project that I launched on kickstarter. In three days I've managed to get from zero to 96% funded (as of 13:40 UK time). It has been an amazing experience so far and this is just the beginning.

So what's the lesson here? I owe the success of the project to having fun. This was never a "serious" project. I just created something that I found fun to do and had the most fun I could when it came to creation, design, copy and video. And this is communicated in everything we have done for the project.

We've created a small fun brand that is relevant to a very niche group, and that's what you need to do.

Have Some Fun

Why is it that we are afraid of having fun in the workplace?

I'm currently working on a project where this is the obstacle we have to overcome. We are creating a game that will allow companies and organisations to identify their brand elements via games. And this is where the problem lies. People don't want to "play" in the workplace. In the end it's a place we go to work not play, right?

I couldn't disagree more with the last sentence. Indra Nooyi gave a very good description of what is happening during her TED2011 talk. People go to the office, hang their personalities at the door and go to work. When they are done, they go to the door, get their personalities on and head home. That's why people don't give their 100% at work and why the results are same as usual. In order to be unique and make a difference, you need to have some fun.

By introducing some time to have fun at work, productivity can rise and strong bonds can be built between the team members. There is no better way to get to know someone than by playing some games. Even brainstorming and other meetings can have a fun element to get people to open up and be more creative.

The end product, whatever that may be, that has been created in a fun environment will be unique and original. Go on, have some fun...
