Startup_live_athens

In November STARTup Live will take place for the first time in Athens! This is an opportunity not just to work with others but also give hope to boosting the Greek ecosystem.

As stated on their site "In short, people from different backgrounds come together to present ideas, listen to new thoughts, work their asses off and get to know each other. This is steroids for your idea. Pitch, form your team, work, get feedback from startups, experts and mentors, present what you have achieved in front of about 150 people including experts from all over Europe. The process is accompanied by coaches, business angels, start-up entrepreneurs and all other participants. You get to know all these people in an informal way, usually standing there with a beer in hand hooking up with your future investors or mentors."

The team behind the event has asked us to join them to mentor the teams so that they produce projects that matter, help them simplify and give them inspiration.

Tickets are just €15 and include food and drinks so if you are in Athens or can travel to Athens during these days, head over to the booking page and get your tickets.

See you there!

What You Can Do in 48 Hours

(download)
That's the time the teams at Startup Weekend had to come up with an idea and execute it. What was the result? A lot of them even had working prototypes, including a website and mobile app!

What I found to be crucial in the teams while mentoring them, was the diversity of the group and focus. Gather around you the right group of people, focus on one thing and you can get more done in 48 hours than other achieve in a month.

If all these teams could come up with great ideas and prototypes in just this time, what's stopping you from starting? Find what you want to do, get a team and start working.

As mentioned in our previous post, I will be mentoring teams during the weekend to make sure that they build strong brands that stand out.

Best of #BrandingThursdays: Colour Psychology and Logo Design

On Wednesday 17th March 2010 we hosted a CUBELUNCH at THECUBE. We talked about the basics of logo design, colour psychology and what image your logo projects to your audience.

According to Elena, the creative designer of our team, you need to consider the following when choosing a logo:

- Decide on what image you want to project.

Your logo should be a reflection of your company's key characteristics. It's about who you are and what you do, so you need to use the right elements to reflect your ethos and values.

- Choose colours wisely.

Colour is an important element of branding. If your colours are chosen wisely they can add value to your image by using the audience's psychology and associations. Avoid clashing colours and always look for professional advice. Below is a list of the most common colours and what their psychology/associations are.

  • Blue: Sky, Security, Trust, Reliability, Coolness.
  • Green: Nature, Fresh, Calming, Cool, Growth, Wealth, Money, Stability.
  • Red: Excitement, Hungry, Strength, Passion, Energetic, Speed, Power, Success, Action.
  • Yellow: Sunshine, Cheerful, Happiness, Contrast, Grabs Attention.
  • Pink: Energy, Romantic, Feminine, Soft, Sweet, Nurture, Security.
  • Orange: Enthusiastic, Cheerful, Playful, Warm, Vibrant.
  • Black: Powerful, Expensive, Prestige, Luxury, Elegance, Style, Sophistication, Seductive, Mystery.
  • White: Simplicity, Purity, Innocence, Clean, Mild.

Of course these are guidelines only and there are always exceptions.

- Target your audience.

Thinking about your audience when choosing the design and colour is fundamental. Different groups react differently to colours.

- Create harmony.

When choosing your colours and matching them to your design you need to always create harmony. Harmony is pleasing to the eye and is an indicator of good design. as such, it often goes unnoticed, as pointed out in the axiom, 'good design is never recognised, only bad design'.

- Keep it simple.

Your logo needs to be as simple as possible. This way you will be creating something that is memorable, timeless, scalable and will stand out. From a game that we did during the CUBELUNCH, we found out that less than 40% of the participants could remember a complicated logo, while 100% remember a simplistic logo. What you need to achieve is create an image that is so memorable that people can recognise and remember it with minimum exposure.

When creating your logo, always seek professional help and ask people about what they believe. Bringing someone from the outside that can see things with a different view and a beginner's mind will help you understand what image you are projecting to your audience and what emotions are associated with it.

The talk was followed by an active Q&A and logo clinic as well as a screening of the movie logorama. (link to movie http://www.logorama-themovie.com)

Not Settling for Good Enough #SimplicityDay2011

Here at minimoko, we rarely organise events. That's because when we do one we want it to be the best it can be. Last year at the end of Simplicity Day 2010, we made a promise that we would be back in 2011.

This promise, along with the excitement for Simplicity Day made us announce this year's event before we were ready. I now regret that this has happened as I have to announce the cancelation of Simplicity Day 2011.

I'm truly sorry if you were waiting for this event in July, but we decided that we shouldn't be settling for good enough. It's not good value for our time or your time. We want to be able to give the best experience to our guests and if we went ahead with Simplicity Day 2011, this wouldn't have happened.

I will though make another promise. We will be back in 2012, just a few days before the Olympic Games, and we will organise a Simplicity Day event that will be the best it can be.

Inspiration is in the Moment

This week I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the Inspire Conference in London. The days were filled with some inspiring talks and nice long breaks where we had the chance to meet new people and exchange ideas.

What I noticed was that among the crowd were some people that throughout the entire conference were clinged to their devices. E-mailing, browsing, twitting, chatting, anything but taking part in the experience. Even during the breaks, there were people that just sat at their seats doing busywork and didn't engage in any conversation. What they failed to understand was that in order to be inspired you had to unplug and let the ideas sink in. This cannot be done when you are spreading your attention to multiple channels of information.

We all live busy lives with information coming towards us constantly. In order to be inspired and have amazing ideas we need to be able to live in the moment. Enjoy the experience and let our brains gather and process the information. Next time you are at a conference, put your devices into sleep and enjoy the experience. Let the ideas take you on a journey and be inspired.

Live Your Brand

Yesterday and today, I've been attending The Inspire Conference. It's a great new conference with some amazing speakers.

One of the speakers yesterday was Peter Vesterbacka from Rovio (creators of Angry Birds). Three things were obvious from his talk that really show how they got their branding right:

1) Angry Birds has a story. It's not about a single game. They continuously update it and create new versions to keep the story going. By also telling parts of the story in the game they have the ability to expand what they do.

2) Angry Birds is a brand. It's not just an iPhone game. It's fun and they are always looking at ways to expand what they offer.

3) Last but definitely not least, they live the brand. Peter showed up on stage with a red Angry Birds hoody and red sneakers. If you have something in your brand that makes a statement you need to shout it all the time. Imagine Peter getting on stage yesterday with a blue suit and light blue shirt, it wouldn't have worked.

What I observed yesterday really goes with what we believe in. Your brand is one of your most important assets and you need to promote it at every opportunity. When you are out meeting people you represent your brand so you need to reflect the same values and image. Peter wears red snickers, what will you do?
